Construction management students at Missouri State University took top honors at the 18th annual Associated Schools of Construction Student Construction Management Competition in Nebraska City.
Missouri State competed against 16 other schools.
The Heavy Highway team, coached by Dr. Kerry Slattery, assistant professor in the department of technology and construction management, placed first in its division. Serge Antonuk of Aurora; Brad Emory of Nixa; Lucas Graham of St. Louis; Anthony Quinn of Belleville, Ill.; and Andrew Underwood of Adrian participated in the event.
The Design-Build team received second place in their division. The team, coached by Dr. Dianne Slattery, associate professor in the department of technology and construction management, is made up of Robert Deal of Springfield; Jay Jackson of Richmond; Nick Lange of Marthasville; Andrew Windisch of Jefferson City; Lindsey Recker of Freeburg, Ill.; and Austin Smith of Belleville, Ill.
“Missouri State has one of the top programs in the region,” said Dr. Shawn Strong, head of the department of technology and construction management. “The Missouri State teams fared better than any other school from the southern third of the region which includes Missouri and Kansas.”
In an 18-hour period, students had to schedule, estimate, run cost analysis and resolve several issues related to a construction project. The proposals included the team’s plans for managing and constructing the project. The students then presented their ideas to a panel of judges comprised of representatives from all facets of the construction industry.
The department of technology and construction management in the College of Business Administration is the largest construction management program in the state. This is the eighth year Missouri State has participated in the competition.
