The Atlanta Braves claimed Cardinals utility player Joe Mather off waivers. The 28 year old had a shot to be the starting third baseman in 2009, but battled wrist injuries. Mather hit .217 in 60 at-bats last year.

Mather was placed on waivers to make room for the Cardinals’ 40 man roster. The Braves have always been interested in Mather. In 2008, the Cardinals and Braves were talking trade and looking for lefty reliever Will Ohman, but the Cards cut the trade talks off when Atlanta wanted Mather in return.
