St. Louis and St. Louis County is making a big push to increase its attractiveness as a global trade hub.

City and county officials have made a formal request of the Commerce Department to make the entire metro area a duty-free Foreign Trade Zone. Such a designation would allow St. Louis businesses to receive goods and “re-export” them without paying federal customs duties. It’s seen as vital to St. Louis’ efforts to become a Chinese air cargo trade hub.
