Royals’ closer Joakim Soria had his stretch of 36 straight saves end when he blew a ninth inning lead of 2-0 as Tampa Bay scored twice to tie it and then once in the 12th to beat the Royals on the final day of the 2010 season 3-2.
The Royals were the only team in the majors to have a perfect record when leading after eight innings. They finished the season 53-1. That shows you how dominate Soria has been this season. His stretch of 36 straight saves was a franchise record, but in the ninth the Rays ended that when Carlos Pena doubled home Carl Crawford and Matt Joyce who singled.
Alex Gordon put the Royals up 2-0 on a two run homer. It was Gordon’s 8th homer of the season.
Wilson Betemit’s error scored Rocco Baldelli who singled in the 12th and stole second base. The Royals had runners on second and third in the bottom of the 12th, but failed to score when Mike Aviles struck out following Mitch Maier’s two out double.
