The Kansas City Royals used a six run second inning and then needed to rally again in the fourth to hold off the Twins with a 10-8 victory on Monday night at Kauffman Stadium. Rookie call-up Jarrod Dyson hit his first major league home run.
Royals’ starter Kyle Davies was ineffective in 3.1 innings allowing seven runs including three in the first inning. After the Royals scored six runs in the second inning off Twins’ starter Bob Slowey, the Royals added one more in the third as the Twins dipped into their bullpen early. Davies couldn’t hold the lead and came out in the fourth, but then Phillip Lumber gave up a three run homer to Jason Kubel and the Twins were up 8-7 in the top of the fourth.
In that big second inning for the Royals, Slowey gave up three doubles and a two run blast to Dyson. Slowely then gave up a single and stolen base to Mike Aviles who scored the sixth run of the inning on a two out RBI single by Billy Butler. The Royals scored three runs with two outs in the second.
The Royals rallied again in the fourth, getting a two run homer from Josh Fields, just his second of the year. Fields missed most of the season with hip surgery and has had just 37 at-bats here in the month of September. All of the scoring was done in the first four innings as the teams locked down their pitching.
Humber got the win and Joakim Soria pitched the ninth inning for his 42nd save.
