A state appeals court has refused to order the Cole County sheriff to provide for the education of a 16-year-old girl charged with murdering a 9-yearold girl last fall. (She was 15 at the time of the murder.)

The lawyer for Alyssa Bustamante plans to take the case to the Missouri Supreme Court. Bustamante’s lawyer says state law requires the person responsible for Bustamante to arrange her ongoing education. But the sheriff says she has been certified to stand trial as an adult and that relieves him of the responsibility he might have had if she were still a juvenile.
