Will Rhymes hit his first career major league home run after umpires reviewed the play and changed their call. That gave the Detroit Tigers the lead in the sixth inning in the eventual 7-5 win over Zack Greinke and the Royals.
The Royals were down 4-0 heading into the fifth inning, when they touched Detroit starter Rick Porcello for five runs including a home run from Yuniesky Bentancourt. However, despite 16 hits on the night, that five run rally would be all the scoring the Royals would get.
Zack Greinke fell to 9-13 on the season allowing six runs, five earned. Greinke struggled with command in the first three innings throwing nearly as many balls as he did strikes and the Tigers took advantage of it.
The reigning Cy Young Award winner lacked command out of the gate, and threw nearly the same number of balls and strikes through the first three innings.
Detroit scored three in the third inning, thanks to an error by third baseman Wilson Betemit who messed up what should have been a routine double play to get Greinke out of the inning. Instead, the Tigers scored two more runs.
