Chris Carpenter gave up a grand slam to Florida’s Brad Davis in the second inning and Marlins’ starter Chris Volstad pitched a complete game shutout as the Cardinals lost 4-0 dropping 6.5 games out of first and reducing Cincinnati’s magic number to seven.

After that inning, Carpenter settled down and only gave up a total of five hits while striking out five. Meanwhile, the Cardinals had no answer for Volstad, who allowed just five hits while walking two and striking out three.

The Cardinals now will get on a plane and head to Pittsburgh where they will play the Pirates in a three game series. If the Cardinals are going to catch Cincinnati, they have to take care of the last place Pirates, whom the Cardinals will play six more times.
