The Census Bureau figures the federal government gave Missouri almost $11,350 last year for every man, woman, and child in the state. The bureau says that’s about $800 more than the national average.

More than $14 billion of those funds came to Missourians in the form of Social Security checks. Defense contractors got almost $12 billion; healthcare — Medicare and Medicaid — got about $15 billion.

The state also got almost $1.2 billion in federal unemployment benefits last year.
