The Missouri Western football team opened their season with an impressive 36-3 win over Mesa State on a record setting night from senior kicker Brad Beckwith who hit five field goals.

The Griffons racked up 446 yards of total offense on the night starting with an opening field goal from Beckwith from 33 yards out, just over two minutes into the game.

The Griffons were able to build a 16-0 lead on three FGs and a 31 yard touchdown pass, but the defense was just as impressive holding the Mavericks to 22 yards of offense on 20 plays in the first half. Western had five interceptions, one off the school record. The Mavericks finished with just 52 yards rushing and 38 yards passing.
