Festus soldier killed in Afghanistan

A Missouri soldier has died in Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Department of Defense reports Staff Sgt. James R. Ide, 32, of Festus, Mo., died Aug. 29 at Hyderabad, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire.

He was assigned to the 230th Military Police Company, 95th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Sembach, Germany.

US House GOP leader Boehner to raise money for Hartzler, Martin

United States House Republican leader John Boehner will come to Jefferson City Labor Day Weekend to raise money for Vicky Hartzler in her bid to upset veteran West-Central Missouri Congressman Ike Skelton.

The Hartzler campaign has confirmed that Boehner will appear at a private residence in Jefferson City Saturday afternoon.

The visit comes as Republicans have stepped up their campaign for the 4th Congressional District, held by Skelton since 1976. Boehner represents the 8th Congressional District of Ohio and is the House Minority Leader. If Republicans can win seats such as Skelton’s, Boehner could become the next Speaker of the United States House.

Hartzler is a former state representative from Harrisonville.

Boehner also will travel to the St. Louis area that evening, also at a private residence, to raise money for Republican Ed Martin. Martin is challenging St. Louis area Congressman Democrat Russ Carnahan.

Fallen soldier returns to Kirksville, funeral Wednesday

The remains of a Kirksville soldier killed a week ago in Iraq returned to his hometown this morning.

Army Sergeant Brandon Maggart, 24, died Aug. 22  in Basrah, Iraq of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using indirect fire. He is survived by his wife, Teresa and their 3-year-old son, Blake, his parents, Teddy and Beth Maggart of Kirksville, a grandmother, Sandy Maggart of Brashear, a brother living out-of-state, a sister, Ashley Lloyd of Unionville, his parents-in-law and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral is Wednesday at 6:00 at the Kirksville Middle School Gym; burial in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Jacksonville. Visitation is Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville. [Read more...]

Rams lose top receiver

St. Louis Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery is out for the season with a torn right ACL. Avery will wait for swelling to go down before undergoing surgery. Avery was the Rams top pass catcher in 2009 with 47 receptions.
