St. Louis Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery is out for the season with a torn right ACL. Avery will wait for swelling to go down before undergoing surgery. Avery was the Rams top pass catcher in 2009 with 47 receptions.

In the hunt for the starting job to replace Avery and play opposite Laurent Robinson include Danny Amendola, Mardy Gilyard, and Keenan Burton. The Rams are getting a boost from the play of their tight ends. In particular, fifth round draft pick, Michael Hoomanawanui has caught the attention of Steve Spagnuolo.

He leads the Rams with eight catches for 112 yards and pulled in a five yard touchdown pass from Sam Bradford on the Rams opening drive of the New England game when Bradford was 4 for 4 for 45 yards.

In fact, 18 grabs have come from the five tight ends fighting for a spot on this roster. All of the sudden with the injury to Avery, the tight end position becomes even bigger in terms of pass catching.
