A Jefferson City judge has rejected a request by attorneys to allow a teen-age murder suspect to continue her education.

Defense lawyers for 16-year-old Alyssa Bustamante had asked Cole County Circuit Judge Patricia Joyce to order the Cole County Sheriff’s Department to provide the opportunity for her to complete her high school education. Bustamante is incarcerated in the Morgan County jail, awaiting trial in the murder of Elizabeth Olten, her 9-year-old neighbor. Authorities say Bustamante has the same access as every other inmate to educational material.

It is the second time the request has been denied by the court.

Though she is being held in Morgan County, she is under the supervision of the Cole County Sheriff’s Office.
