The offense looked crisp today. That’s how I would describe Thursday morning’s scrimmage at Faurot Field. It wasn’t just the first offense either. For the most part, every unit was having success at moving the ball. What stood out the most was the number of dropped passes decreased from the first day.

The offense won 41-19 and there were some big plays that stood out. The offensive stars of the game were Blaine Gabbert and Ashton Glaser, the redshirt freshmen who is fighting for the number two spot on the quarterback depth chart. Gabbert was 16 of 21 for 208 yards and a touchdown.

Glaser was a perfect 9 for 9 for 98 yards with a score, plus Glaser reeled off two big runs that ended with him just punishing the safety who was coming up to make a tackle on him. His first run was 29 yards and he ended by putting senior Jasper Simmons on his back. Then, after he took a vicious hit and was blindsided, he scrambled again for a 70 yard touchdown run taking on another defensive back and not only bouncing off of him, but knocking that DB backwards. That run was whistled dead because of the orange jersey the quarterbacks wear which is used for semi-contact, but this was a full blown collision.

T.J. Moe continued to look good at receiver and tight end Michael Egnew got involved in the offense with five catches for 55 yards. It was nice to see Gabbert go to his tight ends…something we didn’t see much of last year.

Receiver Marcus Lucas, a freshmen from Liberty led all receivers with six catches and 70 yards. L’Damian Washington and Rolandis Woodland had nice touchdown catches or 16 and 29 yards respectively.

Head coach Gary Pinkel thought there were too many penalties and bascially said the job of starting kicker is up for grabs as Moberly, MO. native Trey Barrow hit all seven of his field goals, while last year’s starter Grant Ressel of Jackson, MO. was just 4 for 7, missing a pitch shot 26 yarder.
