For some, the first day of school is a bit tougher than for others.

At the Normandy High School in St. Louis, it had to be a bitter-sweet day at best for the students of the Wellston school district. The state has closed Wellston, forcing students from that district to attend neighboring Normandy. It had to have been odd for Wellston students to cross over and go to a school which had been its long-running athletic rival. Also, Wellston is a much smaller district.

Normandy school officials say they want a seamless transition, without fanfare. News media weren’t allowed on campus for the first day.
