The St. Louis Cardinals picked up third baseman Pedro Feliz and cash considerations from the Houston Astros for minor league pitcher David Carpenter and, in turn, have placed catcher Jason LaRue on the 60-day disabled list to make room for Feliz on the Cardinals roster.

Feliz, a starter on the Philadelphia Phillies 2008 World Championship team, had played in 97 games for the Astros this season at first base and third base and was batting .221 with four home runs and 31 RBI at the time of the trade.

The 35-year old Feliz has the second best fielding percentage among third basemen since 2007 at .967 and has turned the fourth most double plays (95).

“After speaking with our medical staff and consulting with other experts, we have come to the conclusion to put Jason LaRue on the 60-day disabled list,” said General Manager John Mozeliak. “We believe this is in the best interest for Jason and his future. We will continue to monitor his progress and seek the best medical expertise concerning his situation. Part of his required rehabilitation, at this point, is rest.”
