House Budget Committee Chairman Allen Icet, a Republcan from Wildwood, has lost his bid to run for statewide office.

Icet lost the Republican primary for Auditor to political newcomer Tom Schweich. Schweich won 58.6% of the Republican votes, 314,852. Icet received 222,095 votes, or 41.4%. Icet says he hasn’t completely evaluated what went wrong for his campaign.

“We always try to determine what kind of message is getting through and how broadly is that message coming through,” Icet tells the Missourinet. “And that may be something, more of a post-mortem to try talk to people around the state to see what worked and what didn’t work.”

Icet hasn’t announced that he will support the general election campaign of his Republican opponent. Icet says his plans for now are to regroup and spend some time with his family.
