MIAA Looks to Expand

On the same day we learned that commissioner Jim Johnson was leaving
for Pittsburg State), the MIAA sent out a release that official
invitations to join the conference have been extended to a pair of
Oklahoma schools. The University of Central Oklahoma and Northeastern
State University are both currently members of the Lone Star Conference.

The University of Central Oklahoma, located in Edmond, offers 14 sports
(baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s cross country,
football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, women’s soccer,
softball, women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, women’s track & field and
men’s wrestling). UCO has an enrollment of nearly 16,000 students.

Northeastern State University fields 10 sports (baseball, men’s and
women’s basketball, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s
soccer, softball and women’s tennis). NSU’s main campus is located in
Tahlequah, and the university also has two other campuses in Muskogee
and Broken Arrow. NSU has an all-campus enrollment of nearly 10,000
students.

If Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State accept the invitations to
join the MIAA, work will begin in the next few weeks on timelines and
transition issues.

The MIAA is also in the process of considering an application submitted
by Lindenwood University, which was recently approved for NCAA Division
Two status and will be leaving the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

The MIAA CEO Council voted in June to actively pursue expansion to 16
conference members.

Moosmann and Watts sign pro contracts in Germany

Former Central Missouri Mules Alex Moosmann and Sanijay Watts will continue their basketball careers on the professional level, signing contracts to play in Germany. That puts the total to nine under Head Coach Kim Anderson since 2006 that have signed professional contracts since to play in Europe.
Moosmann, who was a first-team All-MIAA and all-region point guard selection after leading the nation with a 4.32 assist-to-turnover ratio, signed to play with RSV Eintracht Stahnsdorf in the German Pro B League.
Watts was a two-time All-American forward for the Mules, including first-team honors last season after averaging 21.7 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. He signed with SOBA Dragons Rhoendorf of the German Pro A League.
“We are pleased that these two outstanding young men, who helped our program to 57 wins and a Final Four appearance, along with regional, conference, and conference tournament championships, will be able to continue their careers overseas.” Anderson said, “They are certainly deserving of this reward. They will be great representatives of UCM along with the other five Mules currently playing in Europe.”
The two, which report to camp on August 15, will join Michael Hicks (2004-06), Wadale Williams (2005-07), Alonzo Brooks (2005-07), Zack Wright (2006-07), and De’Andre Byrd (2007-09) as the other Mules still playing professionally overseas.

MO VA experts react to to record high military suicide rates (AUDIO)

They’re the people on the front lines, to help those returning from the front lines.

On the heels of a military report detailing a record amount of suicides in the armed forces, representatives from Missouri VA Hospitals talk about strategies to combat the problem. It was just one part of the suicide prevention conference in Jefferson City, which was scheduled well before the Army issued a report that 160 active duty military members committed suicide in 2009.  [Read more...]

No Tea Party endorsement for Blunt, no endorsement for anyone (AUDIO)

Members of the Missouri Tea Party movement are making it plain they haven’t endorsed Congressman Roy Blunt in the August Republican primary. A member tells the Missourinet they don’t endorse any candidates, period.

Confusion grew after the announcement that Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, a strong supporter of the Tea Party movement who founded the Tea Party Caucus in Congress, would help make calls at Roy Blunt’s St. Louis headquarters to raise money for his United States Senate campaign. The Blunt Campaign is inviting supporters to join Bachmann and Blunt as they call supporters to raise money. She will speak at a Blunt fund-raiser in the evening.

Eric Farris, director of the Branson Tea Party Coalition, tells the Missourinet the announcement took Tea Party members by surprise.

“And it was just a little bit puzzling that she would be coming in to the state to specifically (appear) on behalf of one candidate when as a Tea Party movement, we hold as a principle that we do not endorse any candidate in any race,” Farris says.

A coalition of Tea Party organizations issued a news release distancing the movement from the Bachmann appearance. In the statement, the organizations suggest that Bachmann might have been misled if she believes Blunt is the Tea Party candidate. The statement criticizes Blunt for his support of the $700 billion financial rescue package known as TARP and for the Obama Administration’s “Cash for Clunkers” program that provided financial incentives to trade in older cars for new models.

Farris says the Tea Party prizes its independence, holding steadfast to its principles, backing no particular candidate. Farris says the key to the success of the Tea Party in Branson is its focus, developing a mission statement and sticking to core values.

“So that keeps you from dancing around to hundreds of issues and hundreds of topics,” Farris says. “Our core values (are) fiscal responsibility, a constitutionally-limited government and free markets.”

Tea Party members have encouraged voters to check the records of the candidates; assess their positions, their voting records and their values before casting their ballots.
