University of Central Missouri golf squad senior-to-be Matt Miller won the Kansas City Amateur Sectional Qualifier on Monday at Oakwood Country Club with scores of 64 and 71, and will now advance to play with 312 others in the prestigious U.S. Amateur Championship.
With his 135 total score, Miller (Eldon, Mo.) edged Will Hogan by two shots, and Matt Ewald by three. All three players qualified for the Championship, with two alternates selected. There are 101 sectional sites across the nation, with anywhere from one to four qualifiers at each.
The U.S. Amateur Championship will be played August 23-29 in University Place, Washington at Chambers Bay Golf Course, as well as The Home Course in Dupont, Washington. The first two rounds will be stroke play. The field will then be cut to the top 64, and played over the final five days in match-play format.
The tournament will be televised live nationally on the Golf Channel during the first five days, and on NBC during the final two rounds.
One of the oldest tournaments in the country, The U.S. Amateur has been played since 1895. Past champions include Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, and Tiger Woods.
