Valley Tourney Run Ends for Bears

Missouri State’s 2010 baseball season ended Thursday afternoon at the State Farm MVC Tournament with a 7-2 loss to Evansville at Eck Stadium in Wichita.

The Bears (21-34) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Luke Voit’s two-out, two-run homer before UE starter Corey Davisson settled in to retire 12 in a row and finish seven innings of three-hit ball. The only thing that could slow Davisson (9-1) was a nearly three-hour weather delay before the eighth inning began.

Evansville (32-26) chipped away at the lead, getting a two-out RBI single from Cody Fick in the third and a sac fly from Fick in the fifth that came within feet of clearing the left field fence for a grand slam.

Andy Pascoe’s RBI single in the sixth gave UE its first lead at 3-2 and the Aces tacked on four more in the seventh for a 7-2 advantage. Greg Wallace smacked a one-out triple to tie the MVC record with 13 on the year before Fick walked and Trentt Copeland reached on a squeeze attempt that scored Wallace. Nate Smith then roped a two-run double to left and scored on a wild pitch for the final margin.

SEMO Baseball Season Ends

Kyle Tiernan and Wes Cunningham each homered in the top of the 10th inning to lift No. 3 Murray State (26-27-1) to a 13-9 win over No. 4 Southeast Missouri (30-25) Thursday at the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.

The Redhawks dropped their first two games of the tournament for the second year in a row.

“We had a rough start, but got back in it,” said Southeast head coach Mark Hogan. “It came down to the end and we couldn’t finish it off.”

Southeast battled back from an early six-run deficit and the game was tied 9-9 going into extra innings.

With one out in the 10th, Tiernan broke the deadlock with a solo home run to right off Redhawks reliever Michael Adamson. Following back-to-back singles and a strikeout, OVC Player of the Year Cunningham launched a three-run blast over the right field wall against Jim Klocke to cap the 13-9 win.

The Thoroughbreds stayed alive in the tournament by winning their second game of the day following an earlier 4-3 loss to No. 6 Eastern Kentucky.

Murray State jumped all over Southeast starting right-hander Nick Thomas in the first.

The Thoroughbreds started the game with six-straight hits and pushed across six runs to take a 6-0 lead. Thomas faced only six hitters and didn’t record an out.

After that, left-hander Logan Mahon got the Redhawks back in the game.

Mahon did not allow a hit or run for three-straight innings, and at one time, retired 12 in a row in a masterful relief performance.

Mahon ended up allowing five hits and three runs, while striking out five in 7.1 innings, his longest outing of the season.

“Logan was outstanding today,” said Hogan. “The way he got us back in the game was admirable.”

Southeast’s offense rallied behind Mahon to score in five-consecutive innings and chip away at the Murray State lead.

The Redhawks tied the game at 8-8 with three unearned runs in the fifth.

Brett Russell drew a leadoff walk and was safe at second on a fielder’s choice and an error. Louie Haseltine singled home Russell before Jesse Tierney gave Southeast runners at second and third with one out. Adamson then knocked in two runs on his two-out game-tying single.

Blake Slattery’s two-out single gave the Redhawks their only lead at 9-8 with two outs in the sixth before the Thoroughbreds won it in the 10th.

Alex Love (7-1) allowed just two hits and one run in five innings to pick up the win. He also s truck out three and walked one.

Adamson (1-3) took the loss for Southeast. He gave up five hits, three runs and struck out two in two innings.

The Redhawks had 12 hits on the day, with three coming from both Haseltine and Casey Jones. Klocke and Adamson followed close behind with two hits apiece.

Bryan Propst went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, three double s and three RBI to lead Murray State. Cunningham added a game-high four RBI, while Tiernan and Brandon Elliott each had three hits.

Southeast, which fell to 0-6 in extra-inning games this season, wrapped up its 2010 campaign at 30-25 overall.

In addition, the Redhawks have lost five-straight games at the OVC Tournament. Each of their last three OVC Tournament losses were in extra innings.

Mizzou Falls at Big 12 Tourney

Mizzou had its chances of winning a Big 12 Championship come to an end on Thursday night as it fell to Texas A&M by a score of 7-2 at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. With its victory, Texas A&M clinched the pool win and a spot in Sunday’s Big 12 Championship game.

Texas A&M starter Barret Loux retired the first 14 Mizzou batters he faced on Thursday as Missouri fell behind 4-0 before putting its only runs of the game on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The leadoff hitters for Texas A&M in both the second and third innings reached with base hits and, in both cases, would score. Joe Patterson in the second inning and Andrew Collazo in the third inning each singled and later crossed the plate to put the Aggies up 2-0.

Brodie Green led off the top of the sixth inning with his 11th home run of the season to extend the TAMU lead to three. Patterson followed with his second single of the game and again scored to make it a 4-0 advantage for Texas A&M.

Mizzou, whose first base runner came in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman Eric Garcia delivered a two-out single, answered the Aggies two-run top of the sixth inning by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom half of the sixth. The first four MU batters to the plate in the inning all reached safely, with the fourth being senior Aaron Senne, who drove in a run with a single.

Sophomore Conner Mach added RBI single later in the sixth inning to cut the A&M lead in half at 4-2. However, the Aggies (38-19-1) responded by scoring a run in the next half inning, and then put two runs on the board in the top of the eighth.

Senne was 1-for-4 on the night and will enter Saturday’s season finale with a .408 batting average. That mark would tie the eighth best single season average in school history.

Sophomore Russell LaFleur had two hits in the game, with both being doubles. His first was in the fifth inning, just after Garcia had broken up Loux’s perfect game. LaFleur added his second double of the game in his next at-bat, coming in the bottom of the seventh.

Missouri (28-26) will close out its season on Saturday as it will take on Texas Tech at Bricktown Ballpark. Gametime is set for 9 a.m.

Bilikens Advance at A-10 Tourney

Saint Louis received a complete game from senior right-hander Bryant Cotton as the Billikens upended No. 1 seed Charlotte 3-2 Thursday at the Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Championship at Campbell’s Field in Camden, N.J.

The fifth-seeded Billikens (31-27) now advance to play either No. 2 Xavier or No. 3 Rhode Island Friday at 11 a.m. (St. Louis time). The winner of tomorrow’s game will earn a spot in the title game Saturday.

Cotton went the distance for his ninth win of the season, which ties him with teammate Alex Alemann for the SLU single-season record. Rich Hansmann and John Marcum also registered nine wins in a season in the 1960s.

Today’s victory came in an opposite fashion from yesterday’s 16-11 slug-fest win against Fordham. Cotton came out on top on the pitcher’s duel, yielding just two runs on four hits in nine innings of work against the league’s top-rated defense. He struck out five and walked one.

Offensively, Cody Cotter and Mike Levine registered two hits apiece, while Cotter, Andrew Guerra and Steve Fernandez all posted RBIs.
