For the seventh time in 15 games, the Cardinals were held to two runs of less scoring just one run in the ninth inning after being held to just six hits in a 5-1 loss to the Florida Marlins on Wednesday night at Busch Stadium.

Jaime Garcia gave a gutsy performance going five innings and working out of a couple of jams holding Florida scoreless. The Marlins broke through with two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh over Blake Hawksworth who gave up all four runs on five hits including two solo home runs. Dan Uggla and Cameron Maybin went deep on Hawksworth in the seventh.

In the sixth, Hawksworth gave up two singles to start the inning, then couldn’t get the ball over the plate with pitcher Anabal Sanchez wanting to sacrifice.  He walked the pitcher to load the bases with nobody out and was lucky to get out of that inning with just two runs allowed.

The Marlins added another run in the ninth as did the Cardinals who got an RBI from David Freese. Before that, the Cardinals were shutdown by Florida starter Anabal Sanchez who held the Cards down to just four hits in the first seven innings.

Garcia, Hawksworth and Tony LaRussa talk about the game.
