House approves anti-abortion bill after harsh debate

Members of the House have voted to strengthen Missouri’s informed consent abortion law, but not until the two sides exchange harsh words during floor debate.

HCS HB 1327 & 2000 outlines what information a woman considering an abortion must be told, outlaws coercing a woman to have an abortion and requires the doctor performing an abortion on a girl younger than 17 to report that abortion to the prosecutor for possible filing of statutory rape. Saint Louis down 1-0 in CBI finals

In the first game of the 2010 College Basketball Invitational championship series, the Saint Louis Billikens fell at Virginia Commonwealth 68-56 Monday night in Richmond, Va. Game two of the series is Wednesday at Chaifetz Arena. If the Billikens win that game, a deciding game three would take place in St. Louis on Friday night.

In this opening game, SLU jumped out to a quick lead. Cody Ellis scored two of SLU’s first three baskets. VCU’s Larry Sanders scored the first four baskets for the Rams to keep VCU close. Kyle Cassity drained a 3-pointer, and Cory Remekun sank a jumper in the lane for a 13-12 SLU lead, but VCU hit three straight three pointers to go ahead.

VCU also outscored the Billikens 13-4 to close the first half to take a 36-25 lead at intermission.

Willie Reed, who led the Bills with 11 points sparked SLU in the second half with two straight scores. Ellis scored in transition to cut the gap to 36-31. After a basket by VCU, Kwamain Mitchell hit a three as SLU closed to 38-34 with just over 17 minutes to play. However, moments later, Joey Rodriguez took over for the Rams by scoring their next 14 points, including three 3-pointers, as VCU extended the margin to 55-42 eight minutes into the half and never looked back.

The Billikens saw their three-game winning streak in the CBI end and are now 23-12.

Garcia will be Cardinals’ fifth starter

Cardinals Manager Tony LaRussa said there hasn’t been a starting pitcher better than 23 year old Jaime Garcia this spring training. After his start yesterday against the Twins, it is apparent he’s the team’s fifth starter.

Garcia went six innings allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out three. Garcia’s ERA this spring is 1.95. He left and was in line for the win after Ryan Ludwick and Albert Pujols homered on consecutive days to give him a 3-2 lead. Ryan Franklin gave up a run in the run in the ninth, but picked up the win when Danny Descalso hit a two run homer in the bottom of the ninth to pull out the 5-3 win.

Garcia was in competition all spring with Kyle McClellan, who was the odds-on favorite to win the job coming into camp. The third candidate was Rich Hill who was the underdog in this group who was coming back from injuries and control problems the last two seasons with Baltimore and the Cubs.

Comments from Garcia on his day.

Senate moves to legalize chips for drinks

A proposal to give gamblers a new way to pay for their drinks and snacks while they’re gambling in Missouri’s casinos has moved ahead in the state Senate. Here’s a scenario:

You’re at the gaming table and you’re thirsty. A waitress brings you a drink. You reach in your pocket to pay her and you have no cash. You’ve already traded it in for chips. State law says you cannot give her a chip. Cash only. She walks away with your drink.

The situation is described as a vestige of loss limits when casinos wanted to keep chips exclusive to the tables for better accounting. Without loss limits, says Senator Jim Lembke of St.Louis, that standard can go away and gamblers should be able to buy drinks with their chips. [Read more...]
