Alex Steen matched the franchise record to start the game on his 20th goal just 8 seconds in, and Patrik Berglund scored at 34 seconds of the second to tie the game at 2-2, but Colorado beat the Blues for the fourth time season 5-3.

Peter Mueller of Colorado had a three point night. The 21-year-old scored twice and Paul Stastny had his fifth goal in three games with two assists. Mueller has scored in all seven games after a trade from the Coyotes, totaling four goals and seven assists after having 17 points in 54 games with Phoenix.

However, the Blues who remained quiet at the trade deadline on Mar. 2, continued to struggle at home dropping to an NHL-worst 12-17-5 at the Scottrade Center, and the Avalanche outscored them 21-8 over four games for their first season sweep since 2005-06.

Blues goalie Chris Mason gave up five goals on 24 shots after coming in 0-3 with a 7.22 goals-against average against Colorado.  Time is running out on the Blues’ playoff bid. St. Louis dropped to 11th in the Western Conference, seven points behind eighth-place Detroit with 13 games to go.
