Senate moves to make some vehicles into houses

They look like houses. They’re sitting on foundations. They have porches and garages. But many of them are problems for county assessors because they’re not houses. Governor delivers down budget news to legislative leaders

It doesn’t appear that a bleak financial picture will brighten anytime soon for state government, forcing more budget cuts. State leaders have been talking about the problem, but haven’t agreed on a solution.

Governor Nixon, a Democrat, delivered somber news Tuesday to Senate Republicans, then to House Speaker Ron Richard and Budget Committee Chairman Allen Icet: state revenues continue their slide and deeper budget cuts will be necessary. [Read more...]

Earthquake in Bootheel, no damage reported

 A magnitude 3.7 earthquake was detected in southeast Missouri today – a reminder that the region is in the most geologically active zone east of the Rocky Mountains.

The earthquake, recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey at 1:37 p.m.,  happened 15 miles east-southeast of Sikeston and was felt as far north as Alton, Ill., and St. Peters, Mo.

“Given its relatively shallow depth of about 3.6 miles, and its magnitude, it’s no surprise that it was felt 200 kilometers away,” said Joe Gillman, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Geology and Land Survey Director and the state’s geologist. “It wouldn’t be surprising for it to be felt even further away.”

State budget crisis talks begin

Governor Nixon is meeting with legislative leaders today to rewrite the proposed state budget for the next fiscal year. Failure of Congress to approve 300-million dollars in supplemental Medicaid spending and continued declines in state tax collections have blown a hole in the proposal he presented in January. MIAA D-II men’s tournament bracket is set

With Saturday’s action complete, the bracket for the 2010 MIAA Men’s Basketball Championship has been finalized. Three of the four first round matchups will be rematches of games that took place during the final week of the regular season.
