No April Fools’ Day joke: $30 million more for schools without more state aid

Members of the Missouri House believe they can increase school funding by $30 million without adding a penny of state money; and it’s not an April Fools’ Day joke.

Rep. Maynard Wallace (R-Thornfield) succeeded in pushing through an amendment to suspend the requirement that local school districts spend one percent of state funding on professional development. [Read more...]

Tax credit reform bogs down

Lawmakers have little trouble admitting the state’s tax giveaways need to be reined in. The sticking point is how.

Tax credits let various interests keep some of their taxes to plow back into their projects, presumably creating jobs or enhancing property values. At a time when the legislature is trying to cut 500-million dollars from the budget, the idea that the state let developers keep 656-million dollars in taxes last year opens some eyes. Importance of pensions slows reforms

The importance of pensions to different kinds of state employees becomes a sticking point in efforts to change state government’s biggest pension system. Participants in the most popular state pension program make no contributions. The state pays all of the costs for what is called a defined benefit program. Lawmakers looking for ways to reduce the costs suggest switching to a Defined Contribution system that reduces state costs but requires future employees to contribute part of their salaries. Rams and Chiefs will not meet in preseason

For the first time since 1996 when the Rams arrived in St. Louis from L.A., the Rams and Chiefs will not face off in the fourth and final game of the preseason in what has been known as the Governor’s Cup.  Instead the Rams and Chiefs meet in the regular season.

House approves protections for high school athletes suffering head injuries

A measure that seeks to keep young athletes from sustaining debilitating head injuries has been approved by the House as part of a larger education bill.

An amendment to a major education bill, HB 1543, would require that high school athletes suffering a traumatic head injury to sit out competition until cleared by a licensed medical professional acting within his scope of practice. [Read more...]
