Lincoln and Missouri

This is Abraham Lincoln’s birthday…although the observance will be lumped together with George Washington’s birthday on Monday as President’s Day.

Lincoln was in Missouri from time to time, but only briefly..As a prominent railroad lawyer, he appeared several times in St. Louis courtrooms. He was in St. Joseph a couple of times. Local lore says he visited Boone County once but there’s no evidence in his records or in Boone County records. [Read more...]

McCaskill letter sparks war of words: Washington vs. Jefferson City

A letter from United States Senator Claire McCaskill (Download PDF) asking state budget leaders what they would do without federal economic stimulus dollars has sparked a war of words between Washington and Jefferson City.

In a letter to Sen. Rob Mayer (R-Dexter), chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and Rep. Allen Icet (R-Wildwood), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, United States Senator Claire McCaskill asks what the state would do without the billion dollars in federal money it is using to make up for lost state revenue. Houses passes restriction on TANF program

PRESS-PASS-GRAPICHouse and Senate debate TANF programs, with the House passing a measure that would restrict Temporary Assistance for Needy Family benefits being distributed to Missourians if they test positive for drugs.

In a federal and state budget battle, Senator McCaskill sends an open letter to some members of the Missouri legislature regarding the acceptance and use of federal stimulus money.

Missouri sports roundup

It’s somewhat of an odd sports day in Missouri. Obviously we have the big news of the possible ownership change for the Rams, but some little odds-n-ends today so I’ll combine them into one story. Here are some of the interesting little tidbits I’ve come across.

Rams find a new owner

The St. Louis Rams announced their majority owners have agreed to sell the team to Urbana, Illinois businessman Shahid Khan. Khan plans to keep the team in St. Louis. Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriquez, the children of late owner Georgia Frontiere will sell their 60% of the team. It must be approved by 75% of the NFL owners.
