Cardinals lock up Schumaker for two years

The St . Louis Cardinals have locked up their second basemen, signing Skip Schumaker to a two year, $4.7 million deal. He started 124 games at second base and hit .307 while learning a new position. Schumaker was converted from an outfielder to an infielder before last season. He had a fielding percentage of .983 while making nine errors in 544 chances at second base.

MSU’s Leonard, MVC Newcomer of the Week

The Missouri Valley Conference announced Lee’s Summit native and Missouri State guard Adam Leonard as the Men’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week. Leonard, a transfer from Eastern Kentucky University, posted a career-high 29 points and matched a career best with seven three-pointers in MSU’s 63-57 loss at Southern Illinois last Wednesday (Feb. 3).

Northwest’s Soy named D-II receiver of the year

Northwest Missouri State sophomore wide receiver Jake Soy, who led the nation with 1,559 yards receiving and 27 touchdowns, was named Receiver of the Year by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette, which released its 2009 All-America team Monday.

Blues drop third straight

The Avalanche scored three goals on six shots in the first 6 1-2 minutes of the second period on their way to build a 5-2 win while they chased Blues goalie Chris Mason, who gave up all five goals on just 15 shots overall.

Missouri Southern’s Apon, MIAA player of the week

Jolea Apon set a Missouri Southern record for three pointers in a game, and tied the MIAA mark, by nailing 11 three pointers in one game. The senior guard was named the MIAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
