Major Replogle to head Highway Patrol, Keathley retires

Maj. Ronald ReplogleThe Highway Patrol leadership change begins. Maj. Ronald Replogle is the new head of the Missouri Highway Patrol. He says he’s worked under Colonel James Keathley for several years.

Replogle says he doesn’t think the patrol will notice a big change after the transition in leadership because he supports many of the successful programs Col. James Keathley put into place. One such success he noted is the reduction in traffic fatalities. Missouri has hit a low not seen for decades. Both he and Keathley attribute the reduction to strengthened enforcement in drinking and driving as well as public awareness campaigns.

However, Replogle says accidents due to inattention — namely because people are texting while driving — is a new challenge the patrol is facing.

Replogle is a 26-year veteran with the patrol, including extensive work with the Criminal Investigation Bureau. [Read more...]

Creating a home for data

All of the computer data we create every day doesn’t just disappear. Billions, trillions, of bytes are stored somewhere. An effort is underway at the Capitol to get more of those storage places built in Missouri.

Server farms, they’re called. Or data centers. They’re warehouses that process data every hour of the day, every day of the year. These are the places that store or process credit card records, hospital records, pharmacy records, driving records, business records. You name it, all of this stuff has to be stored somewhere. State business leader sees great opportunity in China trade hub

A business leader in Missouri sees great opportunity for the state’s economy if it succeeds in landing a trade hub with China at St. Louis’ Lambert Airport.

Missouri Chamber of Commerce President Dan Mehan is vice chairman of the Midwest China Hub Commission. Mehan won’t speculate as to when we might know if the trade hub at Lambert will become reality.

“You can’t build this quickly and we’ve been at this in earnest for a year and a half to two years and we have made great progress,” Mehan says.

Mehan says it’s not a coincidence that the Chinese ambassador to the United States recently came to Missouri and stayed overnight in Jefferson City. Governor Nixon welcomed Ambassador Zhou Wenzhong to his Capitol office for a news conference with the Capitol Press Corps last week. Wenzhong visited St. Louis earlier in the day. The talks centered on trade, but Missouri officials are pressing hard to formalize a deal with China to establish the $40 million trade hub at Lambert.

“They obviously see the potential here or they wouldn’t be here,” Mehan says. “We obviously see the potential which is why we’ve put so much time and effort into trying to make this effort come to fruition not just for St. Louis or Missouri, but for the entire region.”

Mehan says the “sky’s the limit” on what type of trade might flow through a hub at Lambert. It could especially be good for agri-business, bio-tech, and manufacturing parts. China would use the hub to bring its consumer goods to the middle of the United States.

He’ll be walking in space three times for more than 19 hours attaching a new working unit to the International Space Station. This mission is scheduled for about two weeks. Daniel, Williams…Missouri ties to Super Bowl winners

“World Champions! There is no better feeling!” That is what former Missouri Tiger quarterback Chase Daniel tweeted after his New Orleans Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 to win the Super Bowl.

What an incredible first year in the NFL for Daniel. After joining the Redskins as a non-drafted free agent, he was waived by Washington on September 5th. Daniel was signed to the practice squad and eventually the active roster for the Saints on September 26th. Now Daniel will get a Super Bowl ring.

Daniel has some pregame pictures on his twitter account of pulling up to the stadium, plus afterwards, he was at a party with Kenny Chesney and Jimmy Buffett performing.

One more Missouri tie to the game. The Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams a former high school football coach in Missouri and quarterback at Northeast Missouri State himself, helped develop a game plan that did just enough to slow the Colts.

A quick side note, I think I heard on the broadcast, Drew Brees is now the third quarterback from Purdue with a Super Bowl ring. Bob Greise of the Dolphins and Len Dawson of the Chiefs, the two others.
