Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder delivers response to State of State Address

Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder has responded to Governor Jay Nixon’s State of the State Address, criticizing Nixon for calling for new programs and for attempting to fund those programs with money Kinder says Missouri does not have.

“Just like Washington politicians, Governor Nixon called for several new government programs but each of these programs will cost money – money that we do not have,” said Kinder to an audience of invited guests and reporters in the House Lounge. “Now is not the time for ideas to grow the size of government. Gov. Nixon delivers upbeat address during grim economic times

Gov. Nixon delivered an upbeat State of the State address to a joint session of the legislature even with the backdrop of a lingering recession.

Nixon commended the legislature for working in a bipartisan manner to balance the budget and approved economic development initiatives.

“By balancing the budget without raising taxes, making hard choices and managing debt, Missouri is in a strong position to accelerate out of this downturn,” Nixon stated. [Read more...]

First landowner water rights law proposed

A new effort has been launched to protect access to an increasingly precious resource for the first time in Missouri.

Missouri has no law that protects a property owners’ rights to water under his land. The Department of Natural Resources regulates water quality but not water access. Courts have ruled on access to water on a case-by-case basis.

But nothing keeps someone from drilling a well next to a farmer’s irrigated property and pumping hundreds of thousands of gallons out of the underground supply every day.

House committee hears ethics reform bills

The House Special Standing Committee on Government Accountability & Ethics Reform has been presented with two bills designed to make state government more ethical. One bill aims to reinstate campaign contribution limits while the other focuses primarily on reforming the activities of lawmakers.

House Minority Leader Paul LeVota (D-Independence) sponsors House Bill 1322 - legislation which echoes the call made by Governor Jay Nixon that the return of campaign limits is important. [Read more...]
