Whether she left him, or he left her is uncertain in the historical record.  Regardless, she was in a bad way.  A mother of 16, and now alone at the age of 19 or so.  The church would not let her diverce her husband.  She became the mistress of a leader of the city business community.  The legalities of their relationship are clouded.  One historian says she and the businessman "formed a mutual attachment they chose to consider their legal union. From this attachment came a family.  And from that family came a great Missouri City.
