Homeless Missouri students: 14,000-plus

Thousands of students in Missouri’s public schools are homeless. The education department counted 14,350 students living in shelters, doubling up with people in other homes, living in hotels or motels, or having to forage for a place to spend the night in the last school year. “Puppy mill” initiative petition approved for circulation

The Secretary of State’s Office has approved, for circulation, an effort to place the so-called puppy mill initiative on the 2010 ballot. Proponents of the effort now have the opportunity to collect tens of thousands of valid signatures from Missourians if voters are to have an opportunity to approve or reject the initiative.

“It has cleared a hurdle,” said Abe Rakov, Deputy Director of Communications with the Secretary of State’s Office, in an interview with the Missourinet. “Our office has approved the petition for circulation for a statutory change that would be made if this is approved.” [Read more...]

Missouri knows the importance of a Texas Bowl win

Gone are the days of feeling slighted by the Insight Bowl, the Big 12 or whoever the Missouri Tigers wanted to throw blame toward. While they may have done that internally earlier this month, I give head coach Gary Pinkel a lot of credit. He held his head high, accepted the fate of his football team going to a lower bowl and now has the team just a couple of days away from their Texas Bowl showdown with Navy.

HPV vaccine recommended for boys, girls ages 9 to 12

Of all girls born today, about one in 142 will be diagnosed with cervical cancer at some point in their life … in Missouri, that’s about 240 people.

The Missouri Department of Health says Missouri is ranked 14th nationwide for new cases of cervical cancer, the majority of which is caused by contracting Human Papilloma Virus, or HPV.
