Nixon proposes fund to help bio-tech companies

Governor Nixon outlines a major economic development proposal at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis and an animal-health company in Kansas City. He gave a preview at the Missouri Biotechnology Association meeting at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Nixon proposed creating the Missouri Science and Innovation Reinvestment Act to provide the money needed to help the bio-technology and life sciences industries grow in Missouri during a speech to the Missouri Biotechnology Association annual conference at the Lake of the Ozarks. Nixon envisions funneling tax revenue from the growth of businesses in that industry into the Missouri Technology Investment Fund over the next 25 years.

Money would pay for grants, forgivable loans, seed capital, as well as customized training at community colleges and four-year schools.

Rogers MIAA player of the week…again

Southwest Baptist center Matt Rogers was named MIAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending December 13. Rogers averaged 21.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 5.7 blocks in three wins last week for the #13 Bearcats. It is the second time this season the National Player of the Year candidate has earned the award and eighth time in his career.

Missouri State’s Harbor named Camp All-American

Missouri State tight end Clay Harbor (Sr., Dwight, Ill.) is among 26 players, including five from the Missouri Valley Football Conference, named to the Walter Camp Foundation Division I FCS All-America team.

Mel Tjeerdsma right back at work

There is no rest for the coach of the Division II National Champion.  Just two days after the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats beat Grand Valley State 30-23, Head Coach Mel Tjeerdsma and his staff were discussing recruiting trips.  Coach says they are four weeks behind, but hey when you can walk into a kid’s home and say “We’ve played for the National Championship five years in a row,” that makes up for lost time.
