The Globe-Democrat lives again

A dead newspaper has been resurrected in modern form in St. Louis. The St.Louis Globe Democrat died as a daily newspaper October 29, 1986 at the age of 134, leaving St. Louis as a one-paper town. It has been resurrected and has just finished its first week back—as an online-only newspaper.

Publisher Dan Rositano has 16 fulltime staffers and about 20 contributors. He says he’s amazed at the consumer response in the first week.

Speaker Richard says Jetton case won’t affect session

House Speaker Ron Richard says recent charges filed against former Speaker Rod Jetton disappoint his fellow Republicans in the House, but won’t affect  the upcoming legislative session.

Richard, a Republican from Joplin, says the mood at House Republican Caucus meetings last week was a bit down.

“I think they’re a little bit disappointed with recent news,” Richard tells the Missourinet, alluding to charges filed against former Speaker Jetton. [Read more...]

Social Services looks ahead to legislative session, budget concerns

More people than ever are relying on public programs amid rising unemployment, but the departments that administer them are facing budget cuts as well.

Food stamps, Medicaid, aid for families with dependent children … programs administered by the Department of Social Services are in more demand than ever. Meanwhile, state departments wait with bated breath to see where legislators will slash funding as they work to pass a balanced budget in the upcoming session.

Scott Rowson with Social Services says they’re working with the Governor’s staff and legislators even during off session to advise them on proposals they’ll be putting together. They’ll be watching proposals they’re not sponsoring but might impact their department or services as well, he says.
