One of the most seriously wounded soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas a week ago is Joplin native Logan Burnette, who is recovering at a military hospital.

Burnette was waiting to see a doctor for his final review before shipping out when the shooting broke out. He tells CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta that the shooter was close: “The first thing I saw were laser sights on his handgun.”

The most stark memory he has of the incident was “Seeing blood come from everywhere…I didn’t know what to think but seeing bullet wounds in the back of a friend’s head, seeing friends grabbing their arms and blood, just everywhere, it’s a pretty hard thing to see and not have any way of defending yourself.”

One bullet that hit him in the hp went through his intestines. Other bullets hit him in his left elbow and left hand. Other soldiers helped him get out of the room and into another building where he was given first aid before being taken to the hospital in Kileen, Texas. He has since been transferred to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio where he’ll undergo additional surgery.
