McCaskill rebuts insurance industry claim of higher rates

Missouri’s junior senator thinks an insurance company spokesman is far off base claiming healthcare reform will cause massive increases in insurance premiums.

Compromise versions of complicated healthcare bills are being written by majority Democrats in the House and Senate while excluded Republicans take to the floors of both chambers to complain.

The insurance industry has attacked the proposals. One spokesman from Wellpoint, a Missouri Blue Cross/Blue Shield organization, claims the bill will drive up premiums 20 to 200-percent, depending on the status of the insured, because it bars companies from refusing coverage because of pre-existing conditions.

Additional cuts needed to keep budget balanced

State revenue refuses to rebound, so the state budget takes another hit.

Governor Nixon has authorized an additional $204 million in budget cuts, bringing the total cuts to the budget approved by the state legislature this past session to $634 million. Nixon vetoed $105 million dollars from the state budget, and then he withheld $325 million. Nixon announced the cuts during a news conference in the State Budget Director’s office at the Capitol. Bond slams rising electricity costs associated with cap-and-trade

Senator Christopher “Kit” Bond is lashing out, again, at cap-and-trade legislation which is making its way through Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.  The cap-and-trade legislation is designed to cut carbon emissions.  But Bond fears any cap and trade bill that clears Congress would result in higher electricity bills for Missourians because much of our power comes from coal.

Gov. Nixon announces additional $204 million in budget cuts

Gov. Nixon has announced the state will cut an additional $204 million from the budget approved by the legislature last session. The cuts come on top of the $430 million in vetoes and withholdings announced earlier, bringing the total to $634 million. [Read more...]
