Cold Weather Rule takes effect this weekend

Missouri’s Cold Weather Rule goes into effect Sunday, November 1st, prohibiting the disconnection of service when the temperature is forecasted to drop below 32 degrees for the following 24 hour period.

“The Cold Weather Rule is in place to help low income customers when the weather gets extremely cold,” said Missouri Public Service Commission Chairman Robert Clayton in an interview with the Missourinet. “We try to have an orderly system set up to address times when perhaps low income customers cannot afford to pay their bill but it’s also very cold outside, so November 1st is when the Cold Weather Rule becomes in effect.”

Missouri soldier killed in Afghanistan

A Missourian was among the seven U.S. soldiers who were killed on Tuesday in Afghanistan. 27-year-old Sergeant Isaac B. Jackson of Plattsburg died of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device in Arghandab Valley.

Nixon chooses Kansan to head DED

Governor Jay Nixon has announced his choice to head up the Missouri Department of Economic Development. He’s David Kerr, who holds the post of Commerce Secretary of Kansas – the Kansas equivalent of Missouri Economic Development Director.

Kerr, who is scheduled to move into his new job on November 9th, was appointed as Kansas Secretary of Commerce in April of 2007 by then-Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, the current U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Prior to serving as Commerce Secretary, Kerr was president of AT&T Kansas for four years. He joined AT&T in 1979, working for more than 15 years in executive management positions in St. Louis for SBC/AT&T before moving to Dallas in 1997 to become vice president for access marketing for SBC.

SBU and CMSU gain nat’l hoops recognition

Earlier this week, the MIAA conference tabbed Southwest Baptist and Central Missouri as the top two men’s basketball teams in their preseason polls, now both gain national recognition.  Both school appear in the top five of the NABC/Division II Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Southwest Baptist will begin the season at No. 3, while Central Missouri comes in at No. 5.

Blues’ fast start leads to win over Canes

The St. Louis Blues are now 3-1-1 on the road this season after jumping out to a fast start and beating the Carolina Hurricanes 5-2 on Wednesday night.  The Blues took a 3-0 lead in the first period and relied on solid goaltending from Chris Mason. Carolina is now winless in their last seven games. Mason stopped 34 shots and David Perron had two goals, while Yan Stastny and Jay McClement scored 16 seconds apart.
