Congressman worries rural bridge program could be cut

A Missouri Congressman warns that a proposed new federal highway bill would drastically cut funding to repair rural bridges.

Northwest Missouri Congressman Sam Graves, a member of the U.S. House Transportation Committee, says the committee chairman has proposed eliminating a requirement that 15% of the federal money going to the states be used to repair bridges maintained by local governments, so-called “off-system” bridges. It could have a $2.5 million impact on the funding Missouri gets for rural bridge repair and reconstruction. Graves says Missouri counties depend on the program to upgrade rural bridges. He hopes to kill the proposal before it gains steam.

Missouri schoolchildren particularly hard hit by H1N1 virus

As more cases of the H1N1 virus, or Swine Flu, are reported in Missouri, it has become apparent that young people are particularly at risk.

As of last Saturday, October 17th, 5,365 cases of flu had been recorded in Missouri. “Of that (5,365) 58 percent or about 3,100 were aged 5-17,” said Wagar in an interview with the Missourinet. “So school age children are really bearing the brunt of this pandemic right now.”

Dogs rescued from dog-fighting ring up for adoption

Following the biggest dog-fighting ring bust in U.S. history this summer, some of more than 500 pit bulls are up for adoption. The St. Louis Humane Society has been caring for 407 dogs that were confiscated from a multi-state dog-fighting ring raid in July. More than 100 puppies were born after they were confiscated.

Vice President of Operations Debbie Hill says 19 of the dogs have been adopted out, and as the court awards custody of more of them to the Humane Society, more homes will be sought. But, she says, some had to be euthanized.

Hill says adopting these dogs out spreads a message about an illegal industry most people don’t know is so prevalent.

She says it’s amazing how after being so mistreated, the dogs are so people-friendly. Some are even finding a new purpose in life as therapy dogs.
