Health Department sets up flu hot line

Hundreds of cases of the H1N1 flu already have been counted in Missouri–so many that the state health department has set up a 24-hour hotline to provide information to flu victims.

A toll-free call to 877-358-4141 will connect a flu sufferer to a medical professional 24 hours a day. Specialists can answer questions about the flu, when medical care is needed, how to limit the spread of it, and the availability of H1N1 vaccine and the regular seasonal vaccine. [Read more...]

National Guard preparing for spread of H1N1 virus

The Missouri National Guard has developed a prevention program to protect personnel from the H1N1 flu virus – also known as the Swine Flu. In essence, the Guard is gearing up for what might happen down the road.

“The National Guard wants to sort of nip a problem in the bud before the problem occurs,” said Missouri National Guard Public Affairs Representative Bill Phelan in an interview with the Missourinet. “The whole purpose of our H1N1 program at the Missouri National Guard is to keep all of our soldiers combat-ready. Readiness is a big thing in the National Guard, and if your soldiers are sick they are not ready to perform their duty, whatever that duty happens to be.”

The H1N1 vaccination is mandatory for military personnel to make sure these individuals stay healthy.

Carnahan: jobless rate tied to uninsured, shows need for healthcare reform

As Congress continues to debate healthcare reform in Washington, a study by Families USA says about 45,000 people in Missouri lost health insurance coverage in 2009 due to a rise in unemployment.

St. Louis area Congressman Russ Carnahan says it’s a growing problem in Missouri. He says this points to the bigger problem of the current healthcare system.
