MoDOT urges safety in wet conditions

Authorities throughout the state have had to work several swift-water rescues and traffic accidents … all because of lots of rain.

The Department of Transportation is urging careful planning and attentiveness to road conditions during this deluge.  Spokeswoman Sally Oxenhandler says not too many roads are closed yet due to flooding, but that could change as more rain rolls in. And she says closures aren’t confined to one area, but are rather scattered throughout the state.

Congressman Blunt promotes tourism from overseas

The number of foreign tourists visiting the United States is not what tourism boosters would like it to be, and Congress is taking steps to promote what America has to offer to foreigners thinking of coming to this country.

Congressman Roy Blunt (R-MO7) is among the co-sponsors of what is known as the Travel Promotion Act (HR 1035), which has been approved overwhelmingly in the U.S. House and is expected to pass the U.S. Senate when brought to the floor for a vote. [Read more...]

Motorist beware: deer on the road

Deer at the side of a roadMotorists need to be on the look-out for deer at all times, but a state deer biologist says the time is drawing near when the deer begin to move and motorists need to be especially watchful. It isn’t quite that time of year says biologist Lonnie Hansen with the State Conservation Department, but the bucks have begun to move and rutting season will soon be upon us. That means motorists versus deer.

“Some deer-vehicle accidents simply aren’t avoidable. We have deer run into the sides of vehicles and they’re just simply not avoidable,” Hansen says, “but, I think some are avoidable.”

Hansen offers a few tips, the first being to be watchful of deer from now through November. The breeding season normally begins in late October and runs through much of November. Hansen, though, says he has already seen movement by bucks. Deer are more active at dawn and dusk, their preferred feeding times. They often follow creeks, so Hansen says to be on the lookout when the road crosses a creek bottom. If you see one deer, there are likely others nearby.

Cardinals drop game one

Call it a game of missed opportunities. The Cardinals and Dodgers left a combined 30 runners stranded on base, which is a post-season record, but the Dodgers did enough to come away with a 5-3 win to take game one of this NLDS series on a night when Chris Carpenter wasn’t his sharpest.

Not coming through in the clutch has been a concern for the Cardinals of late who have been an up and down team at times during the season at the plate. The Cardinals had an opportunity to jump out to a big lead off Dodgers’ starter Randy Wolf. They loaded the bases thanks to a lead-off walk to Skip Schumaker, a ground rule double by Brendan Ryan and an intentional walk to Albert Pujols. Wolf, then struck out Matt Holliday who never lifted the bat off his shoulder in his first plate appearance. Ryan Ludwick battled Wolf and floated a soft pop up into short center field that was misplayed by second basemen Ronnie Belliard that put the Cardinals on top 1-0. However, Wolf got out of the inning when Belliard made a nice play up to middle to turn a double play and end the threat.
