Thrown food gets national attention

A famous Missouri restaurant where food is thrown at customers is considered one of top restaurants in the nation. Lambert’s Cafe in Sikeston will be featured on the Travel Channel as one of the 101 best places to eat in the United States. Lambert’s is known as “The Home of the Throwed Rolls.” No broadcast date for the program has been set yet.

Earl and Agnes Lambert started their restaurant in 1942. It’s being run by a third-generation of the family. The Lamberts say they make 520 dozen rolls a day, more than 2.2-milion rolls a year. If all of the five-inch diameter rolls made in one year were put in a line, the line would be more than 177 miles long.

If a five-inch regular roll isn’t enough, there’s the cinnamon roll so big it’s called a “hubcap.” Lambert’s says it makes 2400 of them a day.

Early voting petition waits for circulators

Somebody had to start the process. A Columbia woman is the one who has made it possible for a petition campaign to put early voting on the ballot next year. .

Former state League of Women Voters President Jo Sapp filed the petition with the Secretary of State after watching the issue get tied up in partisan politics in the last legislative session and hearing various groups talk about the need to get an early voting law passed. Majority Republicans refused to back early voting unless Democrats dropped their opposition to voter photo ID proposals. The stalemate killed both bills.

The Secretary of State has approved Sapp’s petition for circulation, giving groups a specific proposal to consider running with. She hopes groups promoting early voting in the past will organize around the petition and gain signatures needed to put the issue on the ballot.

Sapp’s petition would allow no-excuse early voting from 17 days before an election until the weekend before election day. She says Missouri is kind of an island on his issue. “As I understand it, all of the states surrounding Missouri have early voting one way or another,” she says.

She says she’s confident citizen groups will pick up the petition and circulate it. Whoever circulates the petitions has to get tens of thousands of signatures by next May 2nd.

Two Bearcats named players of the week

Northwest Missouri State junior quarterback Blake Bolles and sophomore cornerback E.J. Hawkins have been named the MIAA offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for the period ended Oct. 4. Both played key roles in the Bearcats’ 49-35 win against 12th-ranked Missouri Western Saturday in St. Joseph.

Bolles tied a program record by throwing five touchdown passes against the Griffons. He’s the fifth Northwest quarterback to throw for five scores in a game. Bolles passed for 295 yards and completed 23-of-33 attempts. His performance included a 61-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Shaw in the first quarter and a 50-yard strike to Jake Soy in the third.

Hawkins accounted for two of the seven turnovers the Bearcat defense forced Saturday. He forced and recovered a fumble in the first quarter and intercepted quarterback Drew Newhart on the Northwest 13-yard line in the fourth. Hawkins finished with four tackles and was part of a defense that held the Griffons to minus-two yards rushing in the second half. In addition, Griffon wide out Cedric Houston was limited to a season-low 25 yards receiving.

Bolles and Hawkins are first-time recipients of the MIAA’s Player of the Week honor and are the first offensive and defensive selections for the Bearcats this season.

Carpenter, comeback player of the year, will start opener

The game one starter for the Cardinals at Los Angeles Wednesday night is no big surprise. The Dodgers will start lefty Randy Wolf. For much of the season, the Cardinals have struggled with left handed pitching, but it’s Chris Carpenter who will get the ball for St. Louis.

His 17-4 record after nearly two years of injuries have earned Carpenter the National League comeback player of the year. He could still pull off the Cy Young Award, but it’s highly likely that will come down to his teammate Adam Wainwright and San Francisco’s Tim Lincecum. Although, the case should still be made for Carpenter. He has the best winning percentage and ERA in the National League.

In other playoff news. Tony LaRussa has decided to go with Troy Glaus over Khalil Greene as a bench player. Glaus missed most of the year recovering from shoulder surgery, but has impressed LaRussa enough with individual workouts get the nod over Greene who spent two stints on the DL this summer for social anxiety disorder.

Limbaugh does have interest in Rams

NFL sources have confirmed that St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts and radio personality Rush Limbaugh are joining together in a bid to buy the St. Louis Rams. In a statement released by the Rams, owner Chip Rosenbloom said, “Our strategic review of our ownership of the Rams continues. We will make an announcement upon the completion of the process.”

The Checketts/Limbaugh group would keep the team in St. Louis. There are multiple bidders who have moved to the second stage which is where the bidders are weeded out. Kevin Demoff, the Rams’ executive VP of football operations told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the team really wouldn’t comment on outside interests in the team. He stated there is no pressure or rush (excuse the pun) to sell the team.
