Royals swept by Twins, Minnesota and Detroit headed for playoff

The Twins, behind Jason Kubel’s two, three-run homers, beat the Royals, 13-4, on Sunday to snag a share of the American League Central lead on the regular season’s final day.  The Twins will battle the Tigers for the title at 4 p.m. CT on Tuesday at the Metrodome. The winner will advance to the postseason and play the Yankees.

The Royals, with a 65-97 record, finished tied with the Indians for last place or, if you prefer, fourth place in the Central.  The Twins swept the series from the Royals and have won 16 of their past 20 games.

Royals starter Luke Hochevar lasted just three innings giving up seven runs.  Billy Butler finished 0 for 4 and his regular season batting average ended at .301.

Cards lose to Milwaukee, will head to L.A.

The Cardinals lost, 9-7, in 10 innings to the Brewers on Sunday afternoon at Busch Stadium, finishing the regular season with three straight losses and eight in the last 10 games. They will enter the playoffs needing to travel to Los Angeles.

St. Louis tied the game in both the eighth and ninth innings before falling behind and losing in the 10th.   The Brewers took the lead when second baseman Julio Lugo’s throw to first base was late, allowing Jody Gerut to reach first base and Alcides Escobar to score. The Brewers added another run when Colby Rasmus and Matt Holliday lost a Ryan Braun fly ball in the sun and it fell between them, scoring Felipe Lopez.

The Cardinals tied the game in the eighth with a two run single by David Freese before Prince Fielder launched his second home run of the game, a solo shot to right off Todd Wellemeyer, to put the Brewers ahead. In the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals drew three straight walks from Trever Hoffman loaded the bases before a fielder’s-choice grounder by Lugo tied the game again.

Albert Pujols had his 185th assist of the season, passing Bill Buckner’s record for the most by a first baseman in a single season in the fifth.

Job Creation 2020 Committee listening and learning

The Senate Job Creation 2020 Committee is one of three panels set up by Senate President Pro Tem Charlie Shields (R-St. Joseph), each with a different theme: Job creation, health care, and education.

Senator Tom Dempsey (R-St. Peters) chairs the Job Creation 2020 Committee, hoping to come up with some ideas that will improve job creation efforts in the state as we head to the year 2020.

"There are a number of factors that lead to creating an environment which ultimately leads to job creation," said Dempsey in an interview with the Missourinet. "What we’re trying to do is look at the issue, develop a vision statement, and strategically plan to identify goals and measure progress for the State of Missouri."

Two meetings have been held, so far, with an organization gathering in Jefferson City followed by a hearing, last week, in Kansas City. Two more hearings are scheduled – one later this month in St. Louis and another in Columbia in November. Dempsey insists input is being collected from various sources.

"I wanted to be clear as I kind of thought about the process that it was an open process, that certainly the views of others, the input of others – including other Senators – was included," said Dempsey. "I wanted to be clear I was not trying to lead people in a direction where I already have the conclusion and I want to work back from that."

Dempsey and the panel are collecting ideas on such things as workforce development, tax policy, and targeted incentives.

Said the Senator: "We’re looking at this from 30,000 feet or at a very broad level, then through the meetings of talking to people and asking them, ‘What factors do you believe are important? What role do you think the state needs to play?’"

Plans call for the committee to meet in December to develop a vision statement to craft a strategic plan that will lead to legislation and the specific policy decisions that need to be made.
