Two DNR employees suspended over E. coli controversy

There is more fallout from the withholding of information regarding contamination at the Lake of the Ozarks prior to the Memorial Day weekend.

Two Department of Natural Resources employees have been placed on administrative leave without pay for five days. According to a DNR press release, the action is based on initial findings from an ongoing investigation into the department’s failure to close beaches in May, following samplings that showed high levels of E. coli bacteria. DNR is not releasing the names of the employees and will not provide any other details.

The action comes just days after DNR Director Mark Templeton was suspended for two weeks for his role in the affair.

Bullpen Lets Cards Down

A big letdown for the Cardinals last night as they not only lose to the Brewers, but they may have also lost a shot at playing their first post season game next week at home.

Adam Wainwright threw six strong innings, but the bullpen could not hold the lead and Milwaukee beat St. Louis 12-6.

The Cardinals started fast getting two runs in the first inning thanks to RBI hits from Matt Holliday and Ryan Ludwick.

The Redbirds would extend the lead in the third when they would score three more runs.  Colby Rasmus led off with a walk and would score on a double by Alvert Pujols.  Pujols would score after a double by Ryan Ludwick who would later score on a single by Jadier Molina.

In the fourth, Wainwright would help his own cause by leading off with a triple.  He would score thanks to a single from Colby Rasmus.

The Brewers would score their first run in the sixth.

But the turning point of the game would come in the top of the seventh when Kyle McClellan came into the game.  He would get only one out, and the Brewers would score five runs.  Jason Motte would enter later in the inning and throw a wild pitch which allowed another run to score.

In the eighth, the bleeding for the bullpen would continue as Motte, Dennys Reyes and Mitchell Boggs would let five more runs cross the plate.

Wainwright lost his chance to become the first 20 game winner in the major leagues, and at the same time, may have also lost his shot at a Cy Young award.

The Cardinals now trail Colorado and Philadelphia by one game for the second best record in the National League.

Game two of the series is this afternoon with Kyle Lohse getting the start for St. Louis against Milwaukee’s Carlos Villanueva.

First pitch is 12:10.

Royals Can’t Spoil Twins Playoff Push

The Kansas City Royals do not get to play the role of spoiler as their comeback against the Minnesota Twins falls short and they lose 10-7 last night.

Things did not go well for Royals starter Lenny Dinardo as he would only make it into the second inning, giving up seven runs on six hits.

The Twins struck first with five runs in the first and would add two more to the lead in the second.  Minnesota kept up the offensive show by plating three more runs in the fourth to stretch their lead to 10.

The Royals would finally get on the board in the fifth when Yuniesky Betancourt hit a ground ball that scored Alex Gordon.  Gordon had doubled earlier in the inning.  Mitch Maier would then hit a single that scored Luis Hernandez who had come in to pinch run for Betancourt.

In the sixth, Hernandez would hit a bases loaded single that would score Alberto Callaspo and Mark Teahen.  Josh Anderson would then hit another single which would score Alex Gordon.

Two innings later, the Royals would again have the bases loaded.  This time Maier would hit the single which would score Miguel Olivo and Alex Gordon.  But that would end the scoring for Kansas City.

The Twins now trail the Detroit Tigers, who lost last night to the Chicago White Sox, by one game in the American League Central.

Same two teams this afternoon as Zack Greinke will go after win number 17 for Kansas City against Minnesota’s Nick Blackburn.

Game time is 3:10.

Rams On The West Coast

The St. Louis Rams are in California for their game Sunday with the San Franciso 49ers.  St. Louis will be looking to snap its league leading 13 game losing streak.

The Rams will start Kyle Boller at quarterback as Marc Bulger is still suffering from a shoulder injury that happened last Sunday against Green Bay.  This will be Boller’s first start at quarteback since December of 2007 when he was with the Baltimore Ravens.

Head coach Steve Spagnuolo says that Bulger is with the team and might be dressed.  Either way, he will be the third quarterback for the game.

St. Louis will also be without wide receiver Laurent Robinson who also was injured last Sunday, but it is out for the season.

The Rams will be looking to win their first game of the season, while the 49ers come into the game with a mark of 2-1 on the season.

St. Louis is coming off of its best offensive performance of the season, but it came with a loss to the Green Bay Packers last Sunday.  The 49ers are coming off a last second 27-24 loss last week to Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings.

Kick off for Sunday’s game at Candletstick Park is set for 3:15 St. Louis time.

Chiefs Back At Arrowhead

The early part of the season does not get any easier for the winless Kansas City Chiefs as they welcome the 3-0 New York Giants to Arrowhead Sunday afternoon.

This will be the first visit by the Giants to Kansas City since 2001.  Kansas City has only one win over New York in their last four meetings during the regular season.  That was an overtime win in 1995.

The Chiefs are coming off a 34-13 loss last weekend at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles.  Meanwhile, the Giants shut out the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-0.

If the Chiefs have any hope of winning, they will have to try and turn around an offense that ranks 30th in the league.  The defense has fared a bit better, but is still ranked 22nd in the league.

While the Chiefs will be trying to win their first game of the season, the Giants will be trying to go to 4-0 on the season for the first time since the 1989-1990 season.

Kick off is set for 12:00 tomorrow afternoon.
