Cardinals celebration on hold

I bet the Houston clubhouse attendants are happy.  They won’t need to clean up stale champagne and beer out of the visitor’s clubhouse.  Not after the Astros beat the Cardinals 3-0 to delay the NL Central Division clinching celebration.  The Cubs lost at Milwaukee, so the magic number is one.

John Smoltz, who had goggles ready in his locker will have to wait at least one more day.  He didn’t pitch bad, he just didn’t pitch better than Bud Norris who shut down the Cardinals again.  In his first major league start on August 2 nd , he went six innings without allowing a run.  Last night, he went seven scoreless innings while allowing six hits.  Norris is now 2-0 against St. Louis with just eight hits allowed and no earned run in 13 innings.

Smoltz went six innings allowing just two runs on five hits.  He’s struggled getting out of the chute the last couple of starts, but Smoltz retired the side in the first two innings before giving up a lead-off double to Kaz Matsui to start the third.  Then with one out, Norris helped his own cause by singled Matsui to the third.  Smoltz struck out Michael Bourn, but Miguel Tejada singled to put Houston up 1-0.  Tejada would double, then score on a sac fly by Carlos Lee in the sixth off of Smoltz.

The Cubs play in San Francisco Thursday night while the Cardinals are off before starting a series in Colorado.  The Giants and Rockies are locked in a wild card battle and this weekend could be a first round preview.  The Cardinals could clinch the Central Division title if the Cubs lose tonight.

#9 Jennies volleyball upsets Emporia State

The 9th ranked Central Missouri Jennies defeated 3rd ranked Emporia State, 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-23) in a matchup of AVCA Top-25 teams at the UCM Multipurpose Building Wednesday evening.

The first set saw the Jennies jump out to a 7-2 lead, followed by an Emporia timeout. Then the Jens went on another 7-2 run to make the score 19-7 on a Paula Harris kill. They coasted to a 25-11 set win and forced 12 ESU attack errors. UCM hit .440 while the Lady Hornets hit -.121.

UCM led in throughout the second set as well. As a team the Jennies hit .400 in the set. Jennifer Williams added a game high four kills, hitting .500. A late four point run was halted by a Bradye Peniston from Caitlin Pankratz, the Jens ended the set on the ensuing serve to win 25-18.

There were three ties and three lead changes in the third set. With the score 22-17 ESU made a six point run to take the lead 23-22. Abby Gruenbacher, who had four blocks on the night (2 solo, 2 assist), had her biggest at the most crucial point in the match along with Peniston, to give the Jennies the lead 24-23. The Jennies took the match on the next point.

Harris and Huffman led the team in kills with 10 apiece. Rachel Fister and Kelsey Ortwerth logged team-high double-digit digs with 19 and 14 respectively. Pankratz had 30 assists.

Royals can’t get to Beckett

The Royals actually hit Boston starter Josh Beckett.  They had 12 hits off the Sox ace, but couldn’t manage more than two runs and a big fifth inning lead to a 9-2 Boston win on Thursday night.

Luke Hochevar blew a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning when Boston scored six times.  Eight straight hitters reached base including a two run triple by Jacoby Elsbury and a walk thrown in there as Hochevar falls to 7-11 on the year.

The Royals only managed three hits off Becket back in July when they faced him as he threw a complete game.  This time, they came out swinging, but couldn’t get the big hit when it mattered, stranding five runners in scoring position.

NWMS to name training room after Colt

The Northwest Missouri State University athletic training room soon will be named the David "DC" Colt Athletic Training Room. The ceremony, which is open to the public, will take place at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, on the lower level of Lamkin Activity Center.

Colt was a faculty member in Northwest’s Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and was the University’s head athletic trainer for 27 years. In 2008, he became athletic trainer at the Air Force Academy.

In addition to naming the training room in Colt’s honor, a fundraising initiative aims to garner $100,000 for the Colt Fund, which has been established through the Northwest Foundation. The purpose of the Colt Fund is to raise money and house gifts that are designated to support the University’s sports medicine program. The funds will be used at the discretion of the athletic training staff for equipment or immediate or long-term improvements to the athletic training room.

A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Colt graduated from West Virginia University in 1977, received his master’s from Northwest in 1978 and his doctorate in education from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2006.

Colt has been a certified athletic trainer since 1977 and has received many accolades throughout his career, including four Hall of Fame inductions. Most recently, Colt was named to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame in 2008. He also was inducted into the Missouri Athletic Trainers’ Association Sports Medicine Hall of Fame, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame and the Mid-America Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame.

The Sept. 25 ceremony is scheduled in conjunction with the Chip Strong Memorial Golf Tournament at Mozingo Lake Golf Course in Maryville. A portion of the proceeds from the golf tournament will benefit the Colt Fund. Friends, family, former student-athletes, athletic trainers and others who worked with Colt are encouraged to attend.
