Cassel still a question mark

In one breath, Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel said if week one were a playoff game, he feels he could have played.  In the next breath, he says this week is going to depend on what the training staff decides.  Even he is confused.

Questionable is what Cassel is listed for Sunday’s home opener against Oakland.  He continues to move better than he did last week, but he was unable to give a clear answer as to his status.  The more and more I listen to him, the more and more I believe he will not play.

Cassel answered a wide variety of questions about his injury and watching Brodie Croyle’s play from the sidelines on Thursday.  Click below to hear his comments.

Bulger could have more options this week

It was in the Nation’s Capital last year where Donnie Avery made a diving catch coming back on a ball that he caught deep in Washington’s territory that helped give the Rams their first win of the season.  The Rams return to Washington looking again for their first win of the season at Fed Ex Field on Sunday.

The knock on Avery is that he is all speed and no hands, but midway through the season last year, he started to show why he is worthy of being considered the team’s number one receiver.

After the Redskins game, he followed that up in Dallas with his first pro touchdown…a 42 yarder.  Then against New England he pulled in six passes for 163 yards.  He was named the NFC Offensive Rookie of the Month.  Yet, head coach Steve Spagnuolo is not ready to give Avery the "number one receiver" tag.

"Well, I am not going to go with the No. 1 thing. We’ve got a flock of receivers there and I have always stood by that. We try to spread it around. But getting back to Donnie, I am going to tell you what, he is one of the hardest working guys I’ve got, one of the hardest working guys. He is always doing that, whether it is special teams, whether it is running a route, whether it is doing extra conditioning when he was hurt. I saw him in the training room continually. I have got a lot of respect for him – I think he is exactly what you need on the team."

It’s still unclear whether or not Bulger will have a new receiver to throw to.  Earlier this week, the Rams signed former Packer receiver Ruvell Martin who was one of Green Bay’s last cuts.  Spagnuolo had nothing but good things to say about Martin, but he wouldn’t commit to him playing this Sunday.

"I tell you what, for a guy that just got in here in the last, whatever it has been, 36, 24 hours, he has stepped right in there and getting in and out of the huddle and getting lined up learning a new offense. Now I think there was a route there too that he needed a little bit of correction on and I know he dropped the ball. All things considered, he has kind of jumped in there pretty good I think.  One of the things that impressed us when we worked him out was his hands. When you do that kind of workout where there is not much more than running, and agilities, and ball catching, he was pretty impressive there. If he is like what we saw, I think that is pretty good. I am not sure yet."

Ziesel motors for a 73 yard touchdown

Matt Ziesel is a name that you’ll never hear when it comes to the Missouri Tigers football program recruiting it’s next top running back, but for one moment on Monday evening, Ziesel was on top of the football world.

Matt is a special athlete who has Down Syndrome and suits up every game for the freshmen team at Benton High School in St. Joseph and cheers on his teammates from the sidelines.  Well, on Monday with his team losing by a few touchdowns to Maryville High, the coaches called timeout and agreed that Benton could run "Matt’s Play."  Well Matt Ziesel’s play turned into a 73 yard touchdown run.

Check out Ziesel’s long touchdown run .

A few things that are great about this video. First, I love how Matt skips into the end zone to emphatically cap off his huge run.  The first one to meet him in the end zone is one of his big o-linemen who gives him a big-o-hug.  The other thing that I really find touching, is after the teams start heading to their respective sidelines, two of the players from Maryville, the opposing team slap each other five.  It’s the kind of hand slap you give your buddy for a job well done.  What a great show of sportsmanship by both teams, the coaches, and the players.  You should be proud.

Royals sign Aaron Crow

The Kansas City Royals and former Mizzou pitcher Aaron Crow, who was this year’s number 12 overall pick in the draft this past June,  have agreed to terms.  Crow will get a $1.5 million dollar signing bonus and $3 million in guaranteed money in a three year agreement.  Crow pitched for Fort Worth of the Independent League and was 3-0 with a 1.06 ERA.

Crow was also the 2008 Big 12 pitcher of the year.  He was drafted 9th overall in the 2008 draft by Washington, but couldn’t come to terms with the Nationals.
