Making sure the locals get counted

The 2010 census will rely on a lot of volunteers next year to make sure everybody gets counted.

Some preliminary census work is already underway. Verification of addresses has been going on for several weeks. A special state commtitee has been set up to help mobilize local efforts in communities—and those local efforts will rely on volunteers to track down everybody, even some who might prefer not be be found.

The local effort is being coordinated by the Missouri Complete Count Committee led by the director of the state office of adminsitration, Kelvin Simmons. Poeple interested in becoming involved should go to the Missouri Complete Count website. The webpage is http://oa.mo.gov/mocensus.

A lot is riding on the 2010 census for Missouri as well as for other states. Millions, or billions, of dollars of federal aid for hundreds of programs, services, and institutions will be distributed on the basis of population.

Third annual Tour of Missouri starts Monday

tour pic.jpg The 2009 Tour of Missouri bike race rolls out of St. Louis on  Monday afternoon at 2pm.  It is the first time in three years the race will start on the east end of the state.  The seven day race will conclude next weekend in Kansas City.  (Bike racers Dave Zabriskie of Salt Lake City (L) and George Hincapie of Greenville,  SC pose for the Tour of Missouri Bike Race. In 2007, the race started in Kansas City and last year it started in St. Joseph with the first leg ending down on the Plaza in downtown Kansas City. This year the tour will make stops in St. Genevieve, Cape Girardeau, Farmington, Rolla, St. James, Jefferson City, Sedalia, Chillicothe, and St. Joseph.

This first leg will be similar to the past two races in that the St. Louis leg will be exclusively raced in downtown St. Louis.  At each of the above rest areas, each city takes on it’s own party like atmosphere.  If you stake out a spot near the finish line, you’ll be able to mingle with the riders after the race.

Angels dominate Royals with 7-2 win

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have won 23 of the last 28 games at Kauffman Stadium and Sunday’s win was in impressive fashion with a 7-2 final.  Luke Hochevar was the latest victim as he got bounced early.

A four run second inning was started by Gary Matthews Jr.’s single and featured RBI hits by Mike Napoli, Howard Kendrick, Erick Aybar and Bobby Abreu. Aybar’s hit was a triple, his second of the game, which tied an Angels’ club record. Their last two-triple game was by Reggie Williams on June 30, 1999, against Texas.

The Angels picked up three more runs in the fourth. Abreu knocked out Hochevar with a two run double to make the score to 6-1.   Dusty Hughes, just called up from AAA Omaha made his major league debut and after giving up a RBI single that was charged to Hochever, Hughes did well going 4 1/3 innings with just one hit and no runs. He threw 62 pitches, 35 of them strikes.

Cards lose in ninth, magic number drops

Rick Ankiel’s pinch-hit homer in the ninth gave the Cardinals a 5-4 lead, but the Pirates scored two runs off Ryan Franklin in the bottom of the inning to avoid the sweep and win 6-5.  However, the Cards’ magic number to win the National League Central dropped to 15.

The Pirates were trailing 4-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, when they scored three runs off starter Joel Pineiro.  They did their damage with two outs.  Pineiro had just a runner on first when he gave up a ground rule double to Brandon Moss.  Pineiro then walked the bases loaded before Ronny Cedeno singled in two runs.  Jason Jamarillo followed with another RBI single to tie the game.

With the score tied in the ninth, Ankiel hit a two out homer to center field to put the Cardinals back on top.  Ryan Franklin came on to save the game, but Pittsburgh rallied with three singles off Franklin to tie the game.  Trever Miller came in hoping to end the rally, but he gave up a fly ball that was deep enough to score the winning run.

It was just Franklin’s third blown save of the year.

Daniel headed to Saints

Former Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel is heading down to New Orleans where he’ll begin practicing with the New Orleans Saints.  Daniel was released yesterday by the Washington Redskins and will join the Saints practice squad.
