Chiefs cut veteran lineman, Rams d-lineman out for year

Today is the day, 5pm central when NFL teams must get their rosters down to the required 53 players.  We’re keeping an eye on Chase Daniel in Washington and to see what the Chiefs and Rams do closing in on the deadline.

The Chiefs need to make 14 more cuts today after releasing eight players yesterday including nine year veteran, right tackle Damion McIntosh.  He played poorly in the game against the Rams and gave up a brutal sack.

The Rams may be checking the waiver wire later today for a defensive lineman after it was reported that Adam Carriker will need shoulder surgery.  Head coach Steve Spagnuolo said Carriker will most likely land on injured reserve.  This is not the same shoulder that Carriker had surgery on in 2007.

Cards better Bucs by a touchdown

I saw an interesting stat.  Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright gave up six runs total in the month of July.  He then repeated that feat in the month of August. Friday night, in his first September start, Wainwright gave up six runs in one inning.

Wainwright was spotted a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth in the opening game of this weekend series against Pittsburgh as the Cardinals jumped on Pirate starter Kevin Hart early. Hart gave up home runs to Matt Holliday (22nd) and Ryan Ludwick (20th). However, Pittsburgh came roaring back to score six and take a one run lead.

That however was quickly erased when Albert Pujols hit his 43rd home run, a three run, two out shot to put the Cardinals back up 8-6. Wainwright would be done after the fifth inning, but picked up his 17th win.

The Cardinals magic number to clinch the division is 17 following another Cubs’ loss. St. Louis and the Dodgers are tied with the best NL record with 80 wins.

Tejada makes emergency start, Royals lose

Gil Meche was the second Royals starting to pitcher to go down with shoulder fatique in the past couple of days, joining Brian Bannister with the same ailment. Relief pitcher Robinson Tejada took his place and did great going 5.1 innings holding the Angels scoreless. However, in the 8 th inning Jamey Wright walked three and gave up a hit and the Angels scored two and beat the Royals 2-1.

The Royals couldn’t have asked for more from Tejada. He allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out five. Including last night’s start, in his last ten outings, Tejada has pitched 21.2 innings and has allowed just one earned run as his ERA has gone from 5.93 at the end of July down to 3.61.

The Royals got their lone run off Jared Weaver in the fourth when Mike Jacobs doubled and Alberto Callaspo drove him in with a triple. Weaver allowed nine hits in seven innings, but didn’t allow any other runs.

Jamey Wright walked two batters who later came around to score when Ramon Colon gave up a two run single to Vlad Guerrero in the 8th.

Ashcroft could face legal troubles over terrorist-detention policies

A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has criticized the administration of former President George W. Bush over the practice of detaining suspected terrorists without filing charges against the individuals.

This could mean former Attorney General and Missouri Governor John Ashcroft might face personal liability for the decisions. A lawsuit against Ashcroft and other officials was filed in 2005 by Abdulla Al-Kidd, an American citizen who was born Livoni Kidd in Kansas, and who converted to Islam.

He was arrested in 2003 while waiting for a flight to Saudi Arabia, and was held for 16 days as a material witness to a crime. He was never charged.

Ashcroft has maintained he is immune from such legal action. The U.S. Justice Department says it is reviewing the decision.
