Slow start hurts Bears

The 2009 season opener for Missouri State got off to a rocky start before the Bears settled in, eventually falling to Arkansas, 48-10.

Arkansas’ Dennis Johnson returned the opening kickoff 91 yards to put the Razorbacks up 7-0 before the first play was run.  MSU starting quarterback Cody Kirby then threw an interception at the Bears’ 46 on his team’s opening sequence.  The turnover resulted in seven more points for Arkansas six plays later on a 15-yard run by Michael Smith.

Kirby then got the Bears on the scoreboard by engineering a 56-yard drive to the Arkansas 36 yard line before it stalled, setting up a career-long 53-yard field goal by Matt Hottelman to make it a 14-3 game.

However, Arkansas answered on its next possession, going 74 yards on just four plays and capping the drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Broderick Green to make it 21-3 with 1:37 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Razorbacks kept the heat on the Bears early in the second quarter as Tyler Wilson entered the game at quarterback for starter Ryan Mallett to lead the Hogs on an 83-yard touchdown drive that consumed 16 plays and nearly eight minutes.  During the drive, Arkansas had the chance to punt once and kick a field goal another time on fourth down, but instead chose to push forward resulting in two fourth-down conversions and ultimately a two-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Van Stuman for a touchdown to make it 28-3.

Jermaine Saffold took the ensuing kickoff all the way to the MSU 47 yard line, helping Kirby lead the Bears to the Arkansas seven yard line for a fourth-and-five play.  A pass to Clay Harbor from Kirby went incomplete, but Harbor was held in the end zone for pass interference, setting up a Bears’ first-and-goal at the two. On the next play, Jonathan Davis carried the Bears to paydirt with a two-yard score with 2:11 to go in the half, capping a 53-yard, 10-play drive.

Mallett returned to quarterback for Arkansas on the ensuing drive, and he drove the home team 77 yards on 10 plays inside the MSU five-yard line before a 20-yard field goal by Alex Tejada made it 31-10 for the final score of the first half.

The second half was much the same as Kirby continued to move the Bears’ offense, but the Bears could not produce any points.  After the Bears moved into Razorbacks’ territory early, Kirby was hit on a pass attempt, leading to an Arkansas interception at the one yard line on the misfire.  Mallett then led Arkansas 99 yards on seven plays to make it 38-10 when he hit Joe Adams for a 40-yard touchdown pass at the 11:13 mark of the third.

Tejada added a 24-yard field goal at the 6:14 mark of the third quarter, and Wilson later connected with Cobi Wilson on a one-yard touchdown pass with 9:55 to play in the fourth.

The Razorbacks’ 447 passing yards was a school record, while the 591 yards total offense was the most ever by a Missouri State opponent.

Kirby finished with 107 passing yards on 12 completions, including four to Harbor who had a team-high 61 yards. Chris Douglas was the Bears’ top rusher, carrying 11 times for 38 yards.

Arkansas had 144 yards on 30 carries, 50 by Ronnie Wingo, while Jarius Wright caught six passes for 139 yards, and Mallett fired for 309 yards on 17 completions.

The announced attendance of 55,572 was a sellout at War Memorial Stadium and the second-largest road crowd ever for Missouri State.

Missouri State begins its home schedule next Saturday, Sept. 12 when it welcomes Tennessee-Martin at 3 p.m. at Plaster Field.

Gabbert shines in Missouri’s win over Illinois

Mizzou postgame video from Bill Pollock Chase who?  Blaine Gabbert made a major statement with his arm and his legs in his first collegiate start.   Gabbert threw for 25 of 33 for 319 yards and three touchdowns as the Missouri Tigers open the 2009 season with an impressive 37-9 win over Illinois at the dome in St. Louis.

Missouri’s first two possessions were impressive.   After Illinois punted on their first drive, Mizzou started at their own seven yard line.  Derrick Washington’s first run was a loss of two yards.  It wasn’t where you wanted to set up Gabbert for his first pass attempt, throwing from the end zone, but Gabbert found Danario Alexander for a 16 yard gain and a first down.  From there his confidence grew.

9-5 Gabbert.JPG Gabbert (photo courtesy of Bill Greenblatt, UPI) was 5 of 6 on his opening drive and while he got called for an intentional grounding penalty that stalled the drive, he got the Tigers in field goal position for Grant Ressel to hit a 32 yard field goal.  After an Illinois three and out, Missouri took over and established Gabbert with the run.  He reeled off runs of 14 and 11.  Then he showed his arm strength.  At the Illinois 49, Gabbert threaded a pass through two Illini defenders and zipped it into Wes Kemp who sprinted down the sideline 30 yards for a touchdown to put Mizzou up 10-0.

Juice Williams, playing without his top receiver Arrelious Benn who went down on the third play of the game with an ankle sprain, managed to get Illinois down deep in Missouri territory, but came up short on a third and one play and settled for a 24 yard field goal 1:20 into the second quarter.

A key swing in the 2 nd quarter came when Missouri got called for a roughing the punter call after what would have been a three and out with 7:00 to go in the half.  Illinois gained some momentum and drove down to the Missouri 20 but on fourth and one, Illini QB Juice Williams stumbled and fell down at the 24 ending the Illini scoring threat.  Gabbert led the Tigers down for a 41 yard field goal, Ressel’s  third of the game for a 16-3 halftime lead.  An interception by Hardy Ricks earlier in the second quarter, set up Ressel’s second field goal.

The Tigers came out of the third quarter and put together an 81 yard drive capped by a three yard touchdown pass from Gabbert to Jerrel Jackson.  That came two plays after Gabbert found Alexander wide open on a third and 12 completion where Alexander scampered down to the three.

On Illinois’ next possession, the Illini were driving when Walter Aikens recovered Jeff Cumberland’s fumble after he got passed the first down marker beating cornerback Carl Gettis.   After a three and out by Mizzou, the Tigers got the ball back after stopping Illinois.  Mizzou drove 70 yards and scored on a screen pass from Gabbert to Jared Perry that turned into a 46 yard touchdown.  The corner guarding Perry came on a blitz leaving Perry wide open and nobody picked him up.

Illinois drove down the field and scored from two yards out less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, but missed the extra point making the score 30-9 with 13:19 to play.

Missouri continued to pour it on.  On a third and 19, after an illegal blocking penalty, Gabbert found Perry on a fly down the sideline for 21 yards and a first  down.  Derrick Washington had a 32 yard run that took the ball down to the 10.  Two plays later, Gabbert scampered in for the final score.

Redskins place Daniel on waivers, Brennan on IR

According to Chase Daniel on twitter , the Redskins have placed the former Missouri quarterback on waivers in hopes of bringing him back to add him to the practice squad.  The team also place Colt Brennan, who Daniel competed with on injured reserve because of a nagging hamstring injury.

In order for Daniel to return to the Redskins, he would first need to clear waivers and not be claimed by another team.  Daniel will learn of his fate by tomorrow.
