MoDOT ready for federal review requested by NAACP

Federal officials who oversee economic stimulus spendingwill review how the state transportation department is spending it.

The review comes as a response to a complaint filed by TheMissouri Chapter of the NAACP against MoDOT. The NAACP claims MoDOThasn’t awarded enough contracts to minority firms, a violation offederal guidelines.

MoDOT denies the charge. Lester Woods, Director ofExternal Civil Rights Division for MoDOT, says the department welcomesthe scrutiny.

He says St. Louis Congressman Lacy Clay, who is black, haspraised MoDOT’s use of stimulus funds as a model for the rest of thenation. And he says Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Ray LaHood, has also praised MoDOT for its use of stimulus funds for disadvantaged business enterprise programs. DBEs comprise business owned and run by minorities, women and the disabled.

Gailey out as Chiefs offensive coordinator

Chan Gailey is out as offensive coordinator of the Chiefs.  What is not confirmed is whether or not Gailey will stay on in some other capacity.  At Chiefs practice on Monday, Gailey was nowhere to be found while Haley was calling the plays.

There was much speculation when Haley first took over the head coaching job as to whether or not he would fire Gailey or handle play calling during the season.  However, early on, Haley said those responsibilities would go to Gailey.

Apparently, Haley is not happy with the plays, the results or both.  The Chiefs have scored 10, 13, and 10 points in the first three games and have scored just two offensive touchdowns in the first three games.  In Saturday’s loss to Seattle, the only touchdown came from the defense…a 28 yard interception return by Brandon Flowers.

I wasn’t happy with the choice of brining in Gailey last year.  I’ve just never been a fan of Gailey’s offense.  I always thought he got way too much credit for the job he did with Pittsburgh and Miami’s offense when he ran those teams who had strong defensive teams and in his stint as head coach  with Dallas, was unable to win a playoff game.  His play calling is bland and conservative.  I think the final nail in the coffin was when Gailey called 12 straight running plays shortly after Cassel left after the third play of the game on Saturday.

Haley explains why he made the move and even Larry Johnson was smart enough to know this relationship wasn’t going to work.  He adds some good insight.  Click on the link to listen below

Royals look ugly loss to A’s

John Bale’s two run throwing error capped a day full of miscues for the Royals as they lose 8-5 in Oakland.  Zack Greinke named AL pitcher of the week, Dayton Moore’s contracted extended, and Trey Hillman leaves the team.

The Royals jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a three run first inning keyed by a two run single by Alberto Callaspo and a solo home run from David DeJesus in the second.  The Royals gave up the lead when Oakland scored five runs in the third inning.

Oakland scored two runs and had two outs before Luke Hochevar fell apart.  He gave up a walk, a single, triple and another single and just like that the lead disappeared.

Callaspo tied the game up with a triple in the fifth, but when Hochevar ran into trouble in the sixth it was John Bale who couldn’t bail him out.  Bale came in with two runners on walked the bases loaded with one out.  He then got former Cardinal Adam Kennedy to hit the ball back to him.  What would have been an easy 1-2-3 double play turned into a two run throwing error.  Bale decided to try to throw to second to start the double play.  When his infielders were surprised to see him turn around, Bale tried to hold up his throw and instead threw it about 20 feet wide of second base right into the ground.

Bonehead highlight

Zack Greinke was named the American League pitcher of the week.  After his 15 strikeout performance against Cleveland and then his one hitter on Sunday, this was a no-brainer.

General Manager Dayton Moore has had his contract extended through 2014.  A good move.  He’s brought in some good players despite the season they’ve had, there is a good nucleus of players with a solid starting rotation, a closer in Joakim Soria and guys like Billy Butler and Mark Teahen who are proving they can play at the major league level.

Manager Trey Hillman left the team following the death the of his father-in-law.
