Cardinals starter Mitchell Boggs lasted just four innings giving up five runs on nine hits and three walks.  The Dodgers pound out 14 hits in a 7-3 win over St. Louis.  Boggs is now 0-2 as a starter.

Boggs has most likely lost his job.  The Cardinals are expected to add veteran John Smoltz as their number five starter unless he’s claimed off waivers by another team by noon Wednesday.

Not a bad move to pick up a veteran down the stretch.  He’ll only cost the Cardinals $100,000.  Boston would be responsible for the rest of his $5.5 million contract.  If someone does claim Smoltz, they would have to take on the rest of his contract…that won’t happen.

Tony LaRussa could put Boggs in the bullpen.  With Smoltz joining Carpenter, Wainwright, Pineiro and Lohse, that should be plenty of starting pitching for the Cardinals to hold onto their six game lead over Chicago.

Chad Billingsley and three relievers held the Cardinals to just five hits as the Cardinals five game winning streak came to an end.
