While the Chiefs get ready for their first game at the renovated Arrowhead Stadium, head coach Todd Haley team remodeling is still in search of another dependable wide receiver.  On Thursday, the Chiefs looked at another veteran.

Ashley Lelie, the 29 year old veteran with plenty of AFC West experience in Denver and Oakland was getting a look in camp.  No contract has been offered yet, but it gives a glimpse at what Haley and the rest of us know…they need players to catch the ball.

While Haley has had some praise for guys like Terrence Copper and Rodney Wright, he has been pretty critical of third year player Dwayne Bowe, if not verbally, than certainly symbolically by moving Bowe down to third on the depth chart.

The Chiefs already have veterans like Bobby Engram and Amani Toomer.  Lelie could provide another solid option for Matt Cassel.  There are even question marks about his abilities.  In the last two season with Oakland in ’08 and San Francisco in ’07, he has pulled in just 21 catches and two touchdowns.  The other side of the coin is it’s Oakland and San Fran.

How does this effect Matt Cassel?  If anything in the long run, hopefully it helps, because if Haley doesn’t bring in guys who can run crisp routes, make tough catches, and do all the things a good football does, Cassel is going to be the scapegoat for another dismal season.  Cassel sees many positives.  Click on the link to hear his comments.
